Swami Sivananda, Guru of Swami Satyananda, was born on 8th September 1887. We celebrate this day to pay our obeisance, and to continue to draw inspiration from his exceptional teachings. In the words of Swami Satyananda - "Swami Sivananda is like a beacon of light. To hear about him is a joy, to think about him is yoga and to discuss him is to invest the time properly. Even though he lived in the physical body, he was not a physical soul, and his presence is developed the inner awareness without any difficulty."

Ashwin Navaratri: October 8th-October 16th, 2010
Navaratri, which literally means "nine nights", is considered a most auspicious time for yoga practice. Participants came together to learn mantras to harness our innate ability to overcome
obstacles, create abundance, and reach higher states of being.
“Navaratri chants and practices are designed to awaken the human psyche. Just as there is a mental level, an emotional level, a pranic level and a physical
level, so there is a vibratory level to our life as well. This vibratory level is the most subtle of the bodies and the only thing it responds to is frequency. Mantras create such frequencies in the body, in the personality, which stimulate and awaken the subtle personality.” – Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati
Programs with NAG in the Greater Cleveland Area were held Friday-Sunday 6:00-6:45 PM
and Monday-Thursday 8:00-8:45 PM
Gatherings throughout the duration of Navaratri at the Atma Center in Cleveland Heights had over 90 participants.

Swami Dharmakeerti Saraswati
North American Tour, Spring 2011
Dr. Usha Sundaram (Swami Dharmakeerti) worked for many years as a Psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, India. She began searching for additional ways to help people, and decided to apply her many years of training in yoga. Dr. Sundaram found that yoga was a practical and effective approach to reintegrating the body, mind and spirit.
Dr. Sundaram has traveled extensively throughout India and the United States teaching at schools, colleges, temples, churches, corporate groups, and to individuals. She makes yearly visits to the United States. She was a Visiting Professor at Youngstown State University in Ohio from 1988-1989. In 2001, she conducted a six-day course with Joseph Le Page of the IYT, at Kripalu. She has published articles in journals and authored a book on Mantra.
Dr. Sundaram practices under the name of Swami Dharmakeerti Saraswati as initiated by her Guru Paramahamsa Sri Swami Satyananda Saraswati. Under the instructions of her Yoga Guru and the guidance of her Sri Vaishnava Guru, Dr. Rajagopalachar, she is currently researching the ancient meditation techniques described in the Upanishads.
Swami Dharmakeerti brings the message that yoga is not a religion, but rather a science to reach into your inner self and rediscover your potential for healing, wisdom and compassion.

Chaitra Navaratri
April 4-12, 2011 San Francisco Bay Area
Chanting & Kirtan: 8:15 pm to 9:00 pm
Navaratri which literally means 'nine nights' is considered a very favorable time to worship Devi who is nature incarnate because at that time nature is in transition and the body and mind undergo a metamorphosis.
“Navaratri chants and practices are designed to awaken the human psyche. Just as there is a mental level, an emotional level, a pranic level and a physical level, so there is a vibratory level to our life as well. This vibratory level is the most subtle of
the bodies and the only thing it responds to is frequency. Mantras create such frequencies in the body, in the personality, which stimulate and awaken the subtle personality.”

Guru Poornima Sadhana and Events
Guru Poornima Message
from Ganga Darshan
Ganga Darshan
Fort, Munger
Bihar
Blessed Self
Hari Om,
Many individual sannyasins, yoga teachers, disciples and centres have been asking how they can celebrate Guru Poornima in their locality.
For all spiritual aspirants, Guru Poornima is the occasion during which the presence and inspiration of the Guru in life is to be strengthened with respect and gratitude, faith and belief, celebrated in joy and experienced through love, humility and surrender.
Guru Poornima is an opportunity to intensify awareness of the Guru Tattwa and reconnect with ones sankalpa, with renewed commitment, dedication and focus.
Guru Poornima should be celebrated in a simple way, according to available people and resources. All devotees, students, friends and well wishers can be invited to attend their local Guru Poornima function. The program can consist of the following:
-
Chanting of stotram Om chanting 3 times and Vaidic Shanti Path
Guru Stotram
Guru Paduka Stotram
Guru Vandana -
Hawan
Guru Gayatri or Satyananda Gayatri chanting 108 times -
Guru Kirtan
-
Meditation
On light or Guru. Reconnect with and strengthen your sankalpa. -
Showing of DVD of Sri Swamiji (for those who have the resources to do so)
-
Vishnu Sahasranama (for those who know and can chant the mantras)
Many people from overseas have also been inquiring about diksha and whether initiations can be received from various acharyas in the absence of Swami Niranjanananda or Swami Satyasangananda. This point is also being clarified.
In order to retain the sanctity of the spiritual and sannyasa traditions, initiations are given according to the lineage and system of the guru parampara. In the Satyananda tradition, two Paramahamsa sannyasins have been authorized to give initiations, namely Swami Niranjanananda and Swami Satyasangananda. Initiations are conducted by them at Munger, Rikhia in India, or during official programs in India and abroad.
Ashram acharyas, devotees, well wishers, students, sannyasins and all affiliated with Satyananda Yoga tradition should refer any person requesting diksha to contact the Ganga Darshan ashram in Munger, Rikhiapeeth in Rikhia or the organizers of Swami Satsangi or Swami Niranjan's programs in India and abroad.
With best wishes,
Om Tat Sat
Swami Suryaprakash

Northeastern Ohio NAG Event
Friday, July 15 8:30 PM-10:00 PM
Guru Poornima will be celebrated through havan (fire ceremony) and kirtan. Havan is the celebration of the first awakening of consciousness. When man learned how to use fire to help, protect, nurture and sustain him, and when he learned that grains could be cooked and cultivated, this understanding put him on the first rung of evolution. The aim of havan is to use that potential to further launch our consciousness into the unknown dimensions for further discoveries. And Guru Poornima is the special day to pay our deep gratitude to all the enlightened teachers or Masters who dispel the darkness of ignorance and infuse the light of awareness into our lives and guide us into the unknown dimensions.
Email us or call (216) 371-9760 to register for the event.
